A. Objectives
- To arouse students’ interest in learning English via meaningful and interesting learning experiences e.g. drama performance.
- To encourage students to have more contact with English outside the classroom by informing them of different ways to learn English in their daily life e.g. visit to the shopping mall, visit to the organic farm.
- To build up students’ confidence and self-esteem by presenting themselves in English.
- To develop good reading habits in students so that they can extend their vision and knowledge to wider areas.
- To help students acquire various generic skills which are beneficial to both further studies and their future career.
B. Highlights of the year (2011-2012)
One of the major targets of the academic year is to introduce drama in English lessons. We would like to provide students with more opportunities of participation in lessons and enhance their confidence in using the language. Students have had a few interesting lessons and the photos reflect how much they enjoyed the drama lessons. .
C. English Week 2011-12
English Week achieved tremendous success this year. The major function, the English drama competition , displayed the talent and creativity of our fellow students.
The theme of English week this year was “Learning is Funtastic”. It was hoped that students would find learning English a fantastic experience which brought them a lot of fun. Therefore, the drama competition was organized for the first time in our school.
I strongly believe that students enjoyed the drama competition during the English Week. One of the main aims of the drama contest was to enhance students’ confidence in speaking English. It also aimed at cultivating students’ generic skills such as creativity and cooperation.
Although students were given a budget to buy their costumes, some of them chose to make them. For instance, students spent a whole night to change their PE uniform into Spider man and Superman costumes. It was both creative and environmentally friendly.
All the scripts were written by students themselves and they had an important message to convey. For instance, although the drama Prince and Princess was a comedy, it explored the issue of equal opportunities of sexual orientation and discrimination of homosexuality. When the prince found out the princess was not a girl but a boy, he didn’t discriminate him. The line “I love you for who you are” expressed the theme of the drama. The drama The Real Hero was about the evilness of money and real definition of love. The drama Singing Contest was a response to what our school is trying to promote: to build a harmonious campus.
There were other fun activities like miming games and English Speaking Days. Students were given lots of opportunities to speak English while having fun.
If you had been there witnessing all the activities, you would have seen all the smiling faces of students.

No Bullies, No Worries

Many students in Hong Kong are suffering from ‘schoolphobia’ because they are being bullied while at school. Yet, a good many adults, including teachers and parents, regretfully neglect the seriousness of bullying which is a daily recurrence in many schools. Bullying occurs when a student is being picked on by an individual or a group with more physical strength or higher social standing. The consequences of such an atrocity are deleterious not only to the person being bullied, but also to the school and the society in general. The gravity of the problem of bullying and the corresponding remedies would be discussed and suggested respectively in the following.
Bullying poses a great obstacle on both the mental and physical growth of the victim. Bullies target students that they think don’t fit in, perhaps because of their skin complexion, their race, their religion, their personality etc. Thus, the bullied are often being teased for having an unusual outlook. They may feel they are isolated and there’s no one to standby them. Hence, they are reluctant to mingle with their classmates, let alone be able to relate with the strangers in society. This greatly enlarges the doom for their interpersonal skills improvement.
Many students are being physically attacked, which can be anything from shoving, tripping to punching or hitting, or even sexual assault. It should be easy for everyone to imagine how painful it is when a student has been tormented by such a formidable and irresistible school drama replayed day by day. When it recurs over and over again, this drama can put a student in a state of constant fear, which can make them close-minded towards all people and leave them having phobia about everything. Even worse, they may tend to commit suicide so as to get rid of the grievous life.
The reputation of school would be adversely affected by domination of internal bullying as the truth will surface sooner or later. Once bullying occurs in a school, it is difficult to conceal the truth and the public will soon notice its presence. Thus, the school will be at risk of losing potential new students and tend to close down.
A single act of bullying can cause everlasting and irreversible adverse impacts on society. As a common saying goes, “school is the epitome of society.” This indicates that if the bullies bully other students in their school day, there will be the possibility of them causing miscellaneous problems to society as a whole when they grow up. Admittedly, this is malignant to the development of a society. Furthermore, the people who were being bullied during their student age might be indifferent to the school issues, inactive to participate in politics or unwilling to bear or omit their legal and moral responsibilities when they grow up. This does erode the foundation of society.
To deal with the problem of bullying, both adults and juveniles are supposed to take prompt, efficient and sufficient action.
The most essential role of parents and teachers is to make students feel they are not alone and that they can feel safe in school. For parents’ part, they should share more time with their children. Communication with their most trustworthy people is one of the best ways for students to vent their sullen feelings coming from school. Again, parents should help their children to build up their inner strength and tell them what they can do when they have been targeted by bullies.
For teachers’ part, they ought to tightly follow the development of the conditions of students and the circumstances of the whole class to avoid any spark of potential bullying. Moreover, teachers should take the onus to right the whole class, then the whole form and finally the whole school so as to set up a harmonious school life for every single student. Thus, there would be no place for bullying.
Students themselves should not take physical actions in response to the bullies as you can never imagine what the bully will do back to you. Some adults inexplicably believe that hitting back is the sole way to tackle the problem. Nevertheless, that is undeniably absurd! Aggressive responses could only worsen the situation by bringing more violence and more bullying for the victims. A vicious circle is resulted.
Ignoring the bully and walking away should be another way to combat bullying. It does not mean you are a coward. The bullies gain happiness from controlling one’s emotion. Thus, if you walk away or ignore the abusive or insulting words and physical assaults, you are telling the bully that you just don’t care. Then sooner or later the bullies will find it boring when trying to bother or bully you. So just stand firm as you are not vulnerable in front of the bullies.
All in all, school is a place for students to learn not only the knowledge from textbooks, but to gain interpersonal skills and to familiarize themselves with the epitome of society. Bullying is doubtless intolerable as it would ruin the harmonious school life and handicap the mental and physical growth of a student. Hence, the seriousness or impacts of bullying are substantial, adversely far-reaching and too unreasonable to ignore. It is better to cope with the situation now rather than encounter a much bigger problem in the future.
