Message from the Supervisor.
40 Years of Education, 40 Years of Cultivation.
Flashbacking to the past 40 years, Wai Kiu College has been walking through an unusual road. In 1953, we started “Wai Kiu Primary School” in an old tenement house in Shek Kip Mei, that was the former stage of our college. We repaired old tables to become students’ desks. In 1958, the Wai Yeung Merchants Association put up capital to grant permission from government to build a campus in the current address, and named it “Wai Kiu College”. The campus was composed of two stories. In 1968, we built two more stories and set up as a private school. In the late 70s, due to the shortage of secondary school availability, we transformed into the purchased place private school under the government’s Bought School Place Scheme. In 1999 we successfully transformed into a direct subsidy school. We transformed from an old tenement to a well-facilitated school building; from a private school to a direct-subsidy school. During the establishment and the growth of the school, we had to overcome many hardships to bring about these achievements. The reasons why the school can maintain sustainable development are: the enthusiasm and persistency of the school founder; the support from the school governors, and the efforts of the principals and all teaching staff throughout these years. As time goes by, Wai Kiu College is working towards the ultimate education goal step by step. We aim to deal with the uncertainty of the reforming education structure. Wai Kiu College will strive for the best, to contribute to the Sham Shui Po community and the whole society of Hong Kong.
At the moment, besides boosting the effectiveness of teaching and learning, helping students to achieve good results in public examinations, Wai Kiu College also stresses on the Whole Person Education. After the Sichuan earthquake disaster, our principal Mr. Cheng and all teaching staff managed various fund-raising activities, such as instrumental ensemble by students and teachers, Latin dance by students and staff, and ping-pong friendly matches between students and supervisors, etc. We worked closely together to raise funds. Eventually, we raised $100,000 for the victims of the Sichuan disaster. Meanwhile, we cultivated patriotism in our students’ minds.
Ancient Chinese believe in “Self-strengthening”, which means indefatigable, impregnable and indomitable. Didn’t we see every moving scene in the awarding ceremony of the Olympic Games? We were touched not because of the amount of medals Chinese won but because of the dreams they realized. Success can never grow out of luck. Like the Chinese gymnastic team, the diving team, and the women volleyball team, they never yielded in spite of setbacks. This is also the spirit of Wai Kiu College. At this time many of our graduates are not elites. Yet, by the efforts of the supervisors, the principal, teaching staff and alumni, our graduates are devoting their abilities to contribute to our society. I hope all students of Wai Kiu College can fulfill the belief of “Self-Strengthening”. For better or worse, we will overcome together. |
